$120,000 Paint Job or PPF?

It’s no secret that there are some amazing paint-to-sample (PTS) options when you’re building out an enthusiast car. What might be a secret is that you have other options to get the look you desire, without paying an arm and a leg for the paint (i.e., PPF). Porsche has a Python Green Chromaflair PTS that carries a $120,000.00+ (USD) ticket. Is it worth it? Well for some, it might be, but for most it makes that P car a little less obtainable.

If you follow STEK, you know that protecting your new car’s paint is a no-brainer. A lot of folks will go with our clear DYNOshield PPF, high-gloss, very transparent and almost invisible to the naked eye. Our paint protection film can be installed on just the front nose of the car, all the way to each painted panel on the car if you want ultimate peace of mind.

Paint protection film serves as a tangible layer of defense, stopping the vast majority of damage from rock chips, debris, and scratches from ever reaching your paint. If you know you’re getting a new car, you should already be budgeting to protect it with PPF.

But you don’t have to stop at clear protection if the color you wanted wasn’t reasonably obtainable. STEK was the first in the automotive industry to offer a true paint protection film in a variety of colors. The subject of interest in this write-up is one of our most special ones, DYNOshift-green. This green-gold color-shifting PPF is one of the only limited production colors we’ve made, and is a nearly identical match to Porsche’s PTS, Python Green Chromaflair.

The Job – Porsche 991 GT2RS

The team at Hyer Quality Detail in Phoenix, Arizona, found the perfect match for this limited film, a rare Porsche 911 GT2 RS with a Weissach package. With their attention to detail and very impressive craftsmanship, they transformed this car from cool to drool. If we ran a poll on whether it was paint or film, we’re confident that paint would win in a landslide.

Color changing with PPF is no easy task, and you want to make sure you find the right team for the job. That’s where the Hyer Quality Detail’s combined decades of experience make a big difference. They were able to wrap every edge and flawlessly hide seams as it transitions around the carbon fiber panels that this special package came from the factory with.

Hyer’s ability is what has made them one of the largest independently owned auto spas in Arizona, making them an excellent choice for any of your PPF, Window Tint, or Ceramic Coating needs. Safe to say, the owner of this 991 GT2RS chose right by not only the installer, but also the film.

This RS was previously wrapped in a vinyl color shift film. As soon as it came into the new owner’s hands, he knew he wanted to change it, but he couldn’t find the right fit. What was going to be as special as the car people don’t see every day? It took over a year of discussion with the team at HQD and many different samples before they reached out to STEK.

The owner at HQD knew about our DYNOshift-green and thought it might have already sold out. Thankfully, due to its uniqueness, we still had some rolls in stock and could make the dream a reality. As soon as the owner saw the DYNOshift-green, he was sold. What is especially cool is that the DYNOshift-green pays homage to the Porsche’s PTS option. We know there are some purists out there, and this film can be desirable even to them, as it maintains the Porsche’s authenticity and originality.

The Why – PPF vs. Paint?

Now there are other benefits to having this color change done in STEK’s PPF vs. paint. Yes, its roughly a 10th of the cost of the Python-green-chromaflair paint, but it also maintains the value of the car better than paint. Hear us out. Repainting a high-end vehicle almost always diminishes the resale value.

Having good condition OEM paint is extremely desirable for collector cars, whether they’re sold privately, at a dealer, or at auction. The benefits of our colored paint protection films are that you get the look you want for your vehicle while protecting the paint underneath. If you ever want to go back to your original factory paint, all you have to do is remove the film. If you resprayed your vehicle, there is no going back.

It gets even better. Paint protection films are a durable, rock-chip, keying, and stain-resistant material that is also top-coated. The top coat provides a self-healing layer, and this is huge. The self-healing technology allows light surface scratches from washing and daily driving to disappear with the application of heat from hot water or sunshine. That means no more swirls, and a whole lot less stress when you wash, drive, or park your car.

STEK’s Paint Protection Film

STEK’s DYNO line of paint protection films also has extremely strong and long-lasting hydrophobics. That allows water to bead off the surface, taking a lot of the dirt and debris with it. That keeps your car cleaner between washes, and makes washing a lot quicker. What’s not to love??

This car is now protected for 10-years down the road and drastically transformed to make it one with the owner. He’s already enjoyed showing it off at car shows and has plans to have enjoy it on the track soon too, without having to worry about the paint. You can check out his socials here. The team at Hyer Quality Detailing did a phenomenal job and helped provide all the media in this post as well, so we thank them for their contribution and recommend them to anyone looking to get PPF, Tint, or Coating on their vehicle. Until next time, thank you all for being a part of the #STEKrevolution!
